We kick off another season of training with the U21 High Performance Curling program at the Calgary Winter Club coached by Andy Jones and Moe Sonier. Ryleigh Bakker, our skip, as well as Allison Earl, our coach, are the two longest standing members of this program and the rest of our team, Elysa Crough, Madi Senft and Hannah Airey, have all been a part the program for numerous years. We’re looking forward to continuing to work hard to improve our technical and tactical skills with Andy and Moe’s guidance and help.
Curler's Corner Junior Bonspiel
Our first competition of the season is the Curler’s Corner Junior Bonspiel at the Calgary Curling Club this weekend where we competed at the U21 level.
We played hard and made the playoffs by qualifying third in the field and finished as a U21 Women’s semifinalist. It’s always a great challenge and learning experience when competing against teams at the U21 level. Thank you to the Calgary Curling Club for hosting a great event and to Bernice Merrick at Curler’s Corner for your continued support of junior curling!!
Canada Winter Games Trial Camp
Our season starts with a trip to Edmonton for the Canada Winter Games trial camp that runs this weekend at the Saville Centre. We are one of four teams competing to represent Alberta at the Canada Winter Games which will be held in Red Deer in February 2019. Our days will include on ice tactical and technical sessions, off ice training as well as mental and nutrition sessions. We would like to thank Rob Krepps and his amazing coaching team!
We will compete as one of the final four teams at the Canada Winter Games trials in Red Deer November 9-11, 2018 for the amazing opportunity to represent Alberta!
Excel Program
Curling season is just around the corner and we’re so excited to get this season started! We are thrilled to announce that we have been invited to participate in the new Curling Alberta Excel Program which replaces the former Podium Program. We qualified based on a point system applied to last season’s achievements.
The Excel Program is offered to teams that “demonstrate potential to compete at the provincial level and perhaps beyond.” It will “provide top young teams with expert coaching and sport science support with the goal of enhancing both current performance and future potential.” We are honoured to be recognized as a top U18 women’s team this year and are looking forward to continuing to grow and improve our skills both on and off the ice through the Excel Program. Thank you to Curling Alberta and our team sponsors for making this opportunity a reality!
